Convenience packaging refers to food packaging that is designed for ease of use and portability. This type of packaging has become increasingly popular over the last several decades as consumer lifestyles have become busier and eating on-the-go has become more common.
The rise of convenience packaging stems back to the 1950s and 1960s when things like TV dinners, frozen meals, and canned foods started hitting supermarket shelves. As more women entered the workforce and had less time for cooking elaborate meals, demand grew for easy, ready-to-eat options. Food manufacturers responded by developing innovative packaging that was microwaveable, resealable, and designed for portability.
Early examples of convenience packaging included metal cans for canned foods, foil trays for frozen dinners, and plastic or paperboard containers for takeout. But packaging technology rapidly advanced to meet evolving consumer needs. New materials like polyethylene and advanced plastic films enabled the creation of lightweight, disposable containers and bags. Resealable zipper bags and microwave-safe containers also emerged to make food storage and heating more convenient.
